Annapolis

Jake Huard, a welder from a working-class Maryland family, has long dreamed of attending the Naval Academy, which sits across the water from the shipyard where he works. After persistent appeals to a congressman, he is admitted despite mediocre grades. Life at Annapolis proves far harder than he expected: relentless discipline, heavy academic and physical demands, and a commanding officer, Lieutenant Cole, who singles him out and pushes him to the breaking point. Jake's response is to enter the academy's brigade boxing tournament, where rank and status matter less than will, and where a bout with Cole becomes possible.

James Franco plays Jake, with Tyrese Gibson as Cole, Jordana Brewster as Ali, and Donnie Wahlberg as Lieutenant Burton. Justin Lin directed from a screenplay by David Collard; the film runs 108 minutes and was released in January 2006. It was Lin's first feature before The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, which followed the same year, and the start of his run of large-scale action films.

Made for about 26 million dollars, the film returned roughly 17 million worldwide, a shortfall against its production cost. On IMDb it holds 5.8 from around 23,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.9 from far fewer votes. A critics' rating of 4.1 from 113 reviews places professional opinion below the audience scores.
