Short description
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit follows a young man who leaves military service after Afghanistan and settles into a quiet career as a financial analyst on Wall Street. His orderly life changes when the CIA recruits him and asks him to examine suspicious transactions that may point to a terrorist plot to destabilize the American economy. Sent to Moscow to investigate a Russian businessman, he finds himself the target of an attempt on his life, and he has to draw on his military training to survive. The mission draws in Harper, the intelligence officer who brought him in, and Cathy, the woman in his life who ends up in Moscow as well. What began as data analysis turns into a race to stop an international conspiracy from throwing the financial system into chaos.
Kenneth Branagh directed the film, the eleventh in his directing career and the entry between Thor and Cinderella. Chris Pine plays Jack Ryan, Keira Knightley plays Cathy Muller, Kevin Costner plays William Harper, and Branagh appears as Viktor Cherevin. The screenplay is credited to David Koepp, Tom Clancy and Adam Cozad. The film earned 136 million dollars worldwide against a 60 million dollar budget, a solid commercial result. On IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from about 143,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.1 from roughly 3,180 votes, and it has a critics' rating of 5.6 from 185 reviews, so audiences rated it somewhat more favorably than critics did.

- Jack's helicopter was shot down in 2003, and he spent another eight months in the hospital. The events of the film are said to take place ten years later. However, when Jack's girlfriend finds a movie ticket for "Sorry, Wrong Number," the date on the ticket is September 21, 2012, meaning only nine years had passed.
- When identifying visitors, the security monitor displays a message that is supposedly in Russian: "Match data failed." The authors likely meant "No matches found."
