Edge of Tomorrow
Short description
In the near future, an alien race has invaded Earth, and no single nation's military has been able to stop them. Major William Cage, an officer with no combat experience, is sent into battle as part of a massive counteroffensive. He dies within minutes, but the death of an alien at his hands throws him into a time loop: he wakes at the start of the same day, fights the same battle and dies again. His only ally is Rita Vrataski, a Special Forces soldier, and each repetition makes him more skilled against the enemy. The film adapts Hiroshi Sakurazaka's novel, published in English as All You Need Is Kill.
Doug Liman directed this 2014 American production, the seventh of fourteen films in his directing career, following Fair Game and preceding American Made. The screenplay is by Christopher McQuarrie and Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, with Tom Cruise as Cage, Emily Blunt as Rita, Brendan Gleeson as General Brigham and Bill Paxton as Master Sergeant Farell. The film runs 114 minutes.
Against a budget of 178 million dollars, the film took 371 million dollars worldwide, a solid but not overwhelming return. On IMDb it holds 7.9 out of 10 from around 800,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.6 from over 15,000 votes, indicating strong and consistent audience approval. A critics' rating of 7.5 out of 10 from 339 reviews places professional response at roughly the same level as audience opinion.
What's left behind the scenes
- Brad Pitt was initially offered the lead role, but he declined.
- Bérénice Bejo was considered for the role of Rita Vrataski.
- Tom Cruise spent over $100,000 on a party to celebrate the completion of filming for the cast and crew. He himself was not present at the party, as he was finishing work on his scenes in the film at that time.
- Screenwriter Dante Harper was left out of the final credits, despite selling the film's script to Warner Bros. in 2010 for an amount exceeding $1 million.
- The majority of the film's shooting took place on the same sets as the Harry Potter films.
- Emily Blunt confessed that she cried after being put in the metal suit because it was very heavy (around 84 lbs) and she had to film action scenes in it for 5 months.
- Jeremy Piven's character was added during reshoots, but ultimately all scenes featuring him were cut.
- Tom Cruise was one of the first people to learn about Emily Blunt's pregnancy. The film crew and actors had a gap of several months between the main and reshoots. During this period, Emily Blunt became pregnant but decided not to tell anyone. She was only a few weeks along when the actress had to return to filming. Tom Cruise was very puzzled by the fact that Blunt refused to perform her own stunts during the reshoots, considering she had done everything herself during the main shoot, after which Blunt told him about her condition.
- 70 exosuits of various configurations were made for the filming of the movie, weighing from 27 to 57 kilograms.
- The helicopter that landed in Trafalgar Square belongs to the Royal Air Force of Great Britain and was piloted by professional military personnel.
- Although the film's plot takes place over just two days, albeit repeating many times, the art department created 47 sets for filming, including a giant beach where 1300 tons of sand were brought in.
- When Cage is rude to the head of physical training, and they are made to do push-ups, you can notice that everyone is doing them honestly, while Private Kimmel is doing them on his knees.
- The film is based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka's novel "All You Need is Kill" (2004).
- Tom Cruise began pre-production on July 20, 2012, less than a week after finishing work on "Oblivion" (2013).
- The original story takes place during an invasion of Tokyo. Rita is American, and Cage is a Japanese man named Keiji Kiriya, who earns the nickname Killer Cage by the end of the story.
- At the beginning of the film, a voiceover states: "They spread from Hamburg across Europe." Hamburg is located near the north coast of Germany, but the map shows the spread originating from somewhere in central Europe, around Munich.
- At the beginning of the film, among the news footage, you can see a video of the Chelyabinsk meteor fall in 2013, which is presented as part of the alien invasion. These frames were presented as filmed in Germany, as indicated by the caption "breaking news: panic as meteor strikes germany" at the bottom of the screen.
