Short description
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the adventures of Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot as they travel through the cosmos. The group has become a family of sorts, and much of the film concerns their efforts to hold that family together. At the same time, Quill learns that his origins are not purely human, and the mystery of who his father really is becomes central to the story. Old adversaries turn into new allies, and figures from the Marvel comics lend the heroes a hand.
James Gunn wrote and directed the film, his fifth feature and the second entry in the series he began with Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, ahead of The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Kevin Feige produced for Marvel Studios. Chris Pratt leads a cast of sixty-one credited actors as Quill, alongside Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper and Kurt Russell.
Made for a reported 200 million USD, the film took about 864 million USD worldwide, a strong return on that investment. On IMDb it holds 7.6/10 from roughly 824,000 votes, and on TMDB the same 7.6/10 from some 23,000 votes, figures close to the critics' rating of 7.3/10 drawn from 423 reviews. Audience and critical responses were therefore broadly aligned.
What's left behind the scenes
- James Gunn confessed that he and Kevin Feige really wanted to cast David Bowie in a cameo role, but the singer passed away on January 10, 2016.
- The first film to use the Weapon 8K camera manufactured by Red Digital Cinema Camera Company. It is the digital equivalent of cameras working with 70mm film.
- Director James Gunn wanted the film to visually resemble the style of early science fiction novels from the 1950s and 60s. He was inspired by the vintage works of Wally Wood, as well as the Flash Gordon films (both the 1955 version and the 1980 adaptation).
- The height of Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki, who plays Ayesha, leader of the Sovereign race, is 190 centimeters. However, James Gunn wanted her to be even taller and to tower over Chris Pratt. With the help of platform shoes, Debicki 'grew' to 2 meters and significantly surpassed Chris Pratt, who is 188 cm tall.
- During the filming of the first film, applying Dave Bautista's makeup took 4 hours. On the set of the second film, it took an hour and a half. To remove the makeup, the actor had to sit in a sauna after filming.
- The dance of Groot during the opening credits is performed by director James Gunn using motion capture technology. It took the special effects department two years to create the final scene of the film digitally.
- Actors Gary Oldman, Viggo Mortensen, Christoph Waltz, Max von Sydow, and Liam Neeson were considered for the role of Ego.
- Applying makeup to actor Chris Sullivan took from two and a half to three and a half hours.
- Applying makeup to Nebula, played by Karen Gillan, took 5 hours during the filming of the first movie and 2.5 hours during the filming of the second.
- According to representatives from the visual effects team, a trillion polygons were used to create the image of the living planet Ego. Thus, Ego became the largest visual effect in history.
- The insect eaten in the film was made of chocolate and black honey, and the edible yarrow root was made of white chocolate. It was shaped like a pollen grain.
- Matthew McConaughey was offered the role of the villain in the film, but the actor declined the offer.
- In the English title of the film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (literally “Guardians of the Galaxy. Part 2”), “Part 2” refers the viewer to Star-Lord's collection of recordings called Awesome Mix Vol. 1 (“Cool Compilation. Part 1”) from the first film.
- Ego's car is a 1979 Ford Cobra.
- Throughout the film, Groot says the phrase “I am Groot” 17 times.
