Set in Marfa, a small Texas town near the Mexican border, Marfa Girl follows Adam, a teenager of Mexican descent approaching his sixteenth birthday. The town is home to a mix of residents: the local white community, families of Mexican heritage, a group of artists, and border police. Adam spends his days with his friends in a band and with his girlfriend Inez, passing the time with drugs, sex, and run-ins with police. His life shifts with the arrival of Drake, a free-spirited artist. A border patrol officer, Tom, becomes a source of tension for Adam as well.
Larry Clark directed and wrote the screenplay, working from a budget of about two million dollars. The film is his fifth feature as director, arriving after Kids, Bully, Ken Park, and Destricted. The cast includes Adam Mediano, Drake Burnette, Jeremy St. James, Mary Farley, Mercedes Maxwell, and Indigo Rael, and Adam Sherman produced.
The film was released in November 2012 and runs 105 minutes, blending drama and romance. Reception was divided. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.1 from around 2,100 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 4.8 from roughly 72 votes. A critics' rating of 4.1 from 15 reviews places critical opinion below the somewhat higher audience scores.
