Short description
Winter's Tale is a romantic fantasy set in a New York that spans two eras. Peter Lake, a skilled Irish thief, breaks into a mansion and meets Beverly Penn, the daughter of the household, who is gravely ill. The two fall in love, but a criminal boss named Pearly Soames is determined to hunt Peter down. A mysterious white horse becomes Peter's protector, and a supernatural gift allows him to reach across time.
The film is the directorial debut of Akiva Goldsman, who also wrote the screenplay and produced it. It is the first of two films he has directed, followed by Stephanie. Colin Farrell plays Peter, with Jessica Brown Findlay as Beverly, Russell Crowe as Soames, William Hurt as Isaac Penn, Jennifer Connelly as Virginia Gamely and Will Smith as Judge. It is based on Mark Helprin's novel.
Winter's Tale was released in February 2014 and runs 118 minutes. It was made for about 60 million dollars and took in roughly 31 million worldwide, a result that fell well short of its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from around 59,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 out of 10 from about 1,400 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 3.7 out of 10 from 153 reviews, placing it noticeably below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Tom Hiddleston, Garrett Hedlund, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Luke Evans, Liam Hemsworth, and Benjamin Walker were considered for the role of Peter Lake, but Colin Farrell ultimately landed the part.
- Bella Heathcote, Lily Collins, Sarah Gadon, Gabriella Wilde, and Elizabeth Olsen auditioned for the role that ultimately went to Jessica Brown Findlay.
- In the moment when Peter Lake and Beverly Penn are riding away from Pearly Somes on horseback through the forest, different horses are used in different shots. First, it’s a white horse with a gray mane, then one with a completely white muzzle and white mane, and then again a gray horse with black lips.
- When Peter tries to turn the valve on the broken stove, it's visible that the needle on the pressure gauge has fallen off due to the vibrations. But in the next frame, it shows a decrease in steam pressure.
- The film is based on Mark Helprin's novel "Winter's Tale" (1983).
- Hans Zimmer composed a large portion of the film's music before he was forced to leave the project to finish his work on "12 Years a Slave" (2013) and "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" (2014). To complete the film's soundtrack, Zimmer enlisted his friend Rupert Gregson-Williams.
- Originally, the company "Rhythm and Hues" was hired to work on the film's visual effects, but it went bankrupt in 2013. Another company, "Framestore," finished the work on the film.
- In the scene where Somes comes to Lucifer to gain the authority to enter the northern part of the city, Lucifer is reading Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time".
