Rocky V

Rocky Balboa's boxing career has ended. Damage from his fight with Ivan Drago forces him to retire, and a bad move by his accountant wipes out his savings. With his family, he returns to the old neighborhood he once left behind, where he keeps going by running the gym of his late trainer. There he meets Tommy Gunn, a young fighter with talent, and takes him on as a pupil. Their work together brings results, but a promoter with money to offer soon draws Tommy's attention, and the bond between teacher and student is strained as the newcomer weighs loyalty against a richer path.

John G. Avildsen, who directed the first Rocky in 1976, returned to the series for this fifth entry, working from a screenplay by Sylvester Stallone. It sits ninth in the director's filmography, after Lean On Me and before The Power of One. Stallone again plays Rocky, with Talia Shire as Adrian, Burt Young as Paulie, and Sage Stallone as Rocky's son. Richard Gant plays promoter George Washington Duke and Tommy Morrison plays Tommy Gunn.

Made for about 42 million USD, the film took in roughly 120 million USD worldwide, a solid commercial result. Audience scores are modest: on IMDb it holds 5.4/10 from around 161,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.8/10 from over 3,500 votes. A critics' rating of 4.4/10 from 38 reviews places it below even those viewer scores, making it one of the least favored entries in the series among both critics and audiences.
