We're the Millers
Short description
David Clark is a small-time marijuana dealer who sells to cooks and suburban mothers but never to kids, and he thinks of himself as a man with principles. When he tries to help some local teenagers, they turn on him and steal his stash and his cash, leaving him owing money to his supplier, Brad. To clear the debt, David agrees to bring a large shipment of marijuana into the United States from Mexico. His plan is to pose as an ordinary family on a road trip, so he recruits a cynical stripper named Rose, a streetwise teenager, Casey, and a young neighbor, Kenny, to play his wife and children in a rented recreational vehicle at the border.
Rawson Marshall Thurber directed the film, which came after his 2004 comedy DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story and before Central Intelligence, Skyscraper and Red Notice. Steve Faber, Bob Fisher and Sean Anders wrote the screenplay, and the cast is led by Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts and Will Poulter, with Ed Helms as Brad and Nick Offerman as Don Fitzgerald.
Made for about 37 million dollars, the film took roughly 270 million dollars worldwide, a strong return for a comedy of its size. Audience response was favorable: it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 on IMDb from over half a million votes and 6.8 out of 10 on TMDB. A critics' rating of 5.6 out of 10 from 157 reviews is noticeably lower than those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- During filming, Will Poulter often listened to the TLC song "Waterfalls" to sing along to it in character during the scene where it plays. Poulter personally chose the song because he considers himself a hip-hop fan.
- David mentions that he watched the series "Dexter" (2006-2013) while standing on plastic sheeting. Both Matthew Willig and Mark L. Young were "victims" of Dexter.
- The front license plate of the Volkswagen bus is a German license plate from the city of Wolfsburg, Volkswagen's headquarters.
- Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Steve Buscemi were considered for the role that ultimately went to Jason Sudeikis.
- Makeup artists created a plastic replica of Will Poulter's genitals for the tarantula bite scene.
- In the episode where the Fitzgeralds helped the Millers get to the auto repair shop, there is a continuity error: while they are towing the broken bus, all the Millers are inside the Fitzgeralds’ car, meaning no one could be driving or braking with the tow vehicle, yet they successfully reached their destination.
- Adam Driver was initially considered for the role of Scotty, but he had to decline due to scheduling conflicts with the series "Girls" (2012).
- The actors acted out Jennifer Aniston, playing the theme song from the series "Friends" (1994-2004) instead of TLC – Waterfalls, right during filming. This scene became the last one included in the blooper reel.
- When David and Kenny are talking on the porch, a trailer with a family pulls up beside them, and the father asks for directions to the zoo, to which David replies, "Get lost, you lousy Flanderses." This is a reference to the pious and trusting Flanders family from the animated series "The Simpsons" (1989).
- The main character's beard grew literally in half a day (or even one night): when he fights a gangster-drug dealer in the evening, he has no beard or mustache, but by the next morning he does, when he brings "weed" to the office with the aquarium.
