El Infierno follows Benjamín García, known as Benny, who is deported from the United States after two decades away and returns to his hometown in northern Mexico. He finds the village hollowed out by economic crisis, corruption and casual violence, and discovers that drug trafficking reaches from the local mayor to the priest. Unable to find honest work and needing to support his family, Benny takes a job with the cartel of the small border town of San Miguel Arcángel. The money and the lifestyle that follow are unlike anything he has known, but the arrangement soon proves less rewarding than it first appeared.
Luis Estrada directed and produced the film from a screenplay by Jaime Sampietro, with Damián Alcázar in the lead and Joaquín Cosío, Ernesto Gómez Cruz, María Rojo, Elizabeth Cervantes and Jorge Zárate among the credited cast of thirty-five. It was Estrada's third feature, arriving between Herod's Law and ¡Que viva México!, and it was released on 3 September 2010.
The film runs 148 minutes and mixes action, comedy, crime, drama and western elements. It took about 7 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.7/10 from roughly 14,000 votes, and on TMDB 8/10 from over 800 votes, a level of approval that suggests an audience responding to the film's bleak humour as much as to its violence.
