Short description
Filth centres on Bruce Robertson, a Scottish police detective who is corrupt, drug-addicted and eaten up by bigotry, and who sets out to win a promotion by undermining the colleagues he is competing against. A murder case gives him the chance he wants: solve it, and the promotion, and with it the return of his wife, will follow. His behaviour grows steadily more erratic as he pursues the investigation, manipulating a fellow officer and chasing women while his partner, Ray Lennox, and his superior, Bob Toal, keep an eye on him. The film is based on Irvine Welsh's novel and sets its story in Scotland.
Jon S. Baird directed and wrote the screenplay, following his debut Cass, and James McAvoy produced as well as taking the lead as Bruce. The supporting cast includes Jamie Bell, Eddie Marsan, Imogen Poots, Brian McCardie and Emun Elliott, among 47 credited performers.
Filth was released in 2013 and runs 97 minutes. Made for about 5 million US dollars, it took roughly 9 million worldwide. It holds a rating of 7 out of 10 on IMDb from around 122,000 votes, against 6.8 out of 10 on TMDB from just under 2,000 votes, while the film critics' rating stands at 6.2 out of 10 from 95 reviews. Baird's later films are Stan & Ollie, Tetris and Everything's Going to Be Great.
