Short description
Anne Elliot gave up her engagement to Frederick Wentworth, a naval officer without fortune or standing, after her father and a family friend persuaded her he was not a suitable match. Eight years later, her father's debts force the family to let their estate to Admiral Croft and his wife, who happens to be Wentworth's sister. Wentworth, now a wealthy and decorated captain, returns to the neighbourhood, where the family expects him to court one of Anne's cousins. Anne, who never stopped caring for him, must face him again while her cousin William Elliot and others circle the family's affairs. The story is drawn from Jane Austen's novel.
Adrian Shergold directed this adaptation, which followed his 2005 film Pierrepoint: The Last Hangman and preceded Cordelia in 2019. Simon Burke wrote the screenplay, David Snodin produced, and Sally Hawkins plays Anne opposite Rupert Penry-Jones as Wentworth. Alice Krige, Tobias Menzies, Anthony Stewart Head and Julia Davis round out the cast. Made for television, it runs 93 minutes.
It holds a 7.4 rating on IMDb from around 18,000 votes and a 7.2 on TMDB, where the vote count is much smaller. The two sit close together, suggesting viewers of both the television broadcast and later home-viewing releases have responded similarly to the film.
What's left behind the scenes
- After being cast as Anne Elliot, Sally Hawkins reread all of Jane Austen's works (who is credited as a screenwriter in the film), as well as her personal correspondence and biographies. Austen passed away in her early forties. In an interview, the actress described Austen as an extraordinary woman. She believed that "Sense and Sensibility" (1811) was a novel about Austen's own personal life, and that Anne needlessly pushes away the man who becomes her only love. Hawkins sincerely admired her character.
