Closing the Ring

During the Second World War, an American bomber goes down in Ireland. Before he dies, a crew member gives a local man a ring and asks him to see that it reaches his girlfriend in the United States. Roughly half a century later, in Belfast, a young man named Jimmy finds the ring in the wreckage and sets out to learn who it belonged to. His search leads him to Michigan and to Ethel Ann, an older woman who long ago loved a young man named Teddy. In the years before the war, Ethel Ann, Teddy and their friends Jack and Chuck were close, and Teddy's death in combat set the course of her life. The past returns to her through Jimmy's discovery, and she is left to decide how far she will follow the ring's story.

Richard Attenborough directed the film, working from a screenplay by Peter Woodward. It was his twelfth feature as director, arriving after Grey Owl in 1999. Shirley MacLaine plays the older Ethel Ann, with Christopher Plummer as Jack and Mischa Barton as the young Ethel Ann; Stephen Amell appears as Teddy, Neve Campbell as Marie and Pete Postlethwaite as Quinlan, among a credited cast of 54. The production was a British, Irish, Canadian and American co-production made for about 23 million dollars.
