Appleseed: Ex Machina

Set in the 2130s, after a worldwide war has killed more than half of humanity, the film takes place in Olympus, a city-state run by a supercomputer and home to both humans and bioroids, artificially created beings with suppressed emotions. Deunan and Briareos serve in ESWAT, the paramilitary unit that keeps order in the city. When a wave of terrorism strikes Olympus, Briareos is wounded, and Deunan is paired with Tereus, a bioroid whose face and voice closely resemble Briareos from before he became a cyborg. The change unsettles Deunan as the attacks continue.

Shinji Aramaki directed, following his 2004 film Appleseed and preceding Halo Legends, Starship Troopers: Invasion and further entries in the series. The screenplay is by Kiyoto Takeuchi, and John Woo, Terence Chang and Joseph Chou produced. The voice cast includes Ai Kobayashi as Deunan, Koichi Yamadera as Briareos, Yuji Kishi as Tereus, Kong Kuwata, Shinpachi Tsuji and Gara Takashima, with animation work from Toei Animation, Digital Frontier and other studios.

Released in 2007, the film rates 7 out of 10 on IMDb across roughly 10,000 votes, while on TMDB it holds 6.5 out of 10 from about 243 votes. The much larger IMDb sample suggests a steady, moderately favourable response, and the higher IMDb figure compared with the TMDB one indicates audiences there were somewhat more positive.
