Katy McLaughlin, sixteen years old, wants nothing more than to work on her family's horse ranch in the mountains of Wyoming, but her father Rob insists she finish her schooling away from home. After returning to the ranch, Katy finds a wild mustang in the hills and sets out to tame it, naming the horse Flicka. Her father opposes the plan, and the conflict between them grows as Katy tries to prove she can take on responsibility for the struggling ranch. The family's resolve is tested further when difficult circumstances force them to pull together.
Michael Mayer directed the film, his first feature, from a screenplay by Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal; Gil Netter produced. Alison Lohman plays Katy, with Tim McGraw as Rob, Maria Bello as Nell, Ryan Kwanten as Howard, Danny Pino as Jack and Dallas Roberts as Gus. The film runs 95 minutes and was released in October 2006.
Made for a budget of 15 million dollars, Flicka took in about 22 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from roughly 8,900 votes, while on TMDB it scores 6.9 out of 10 from around 317 votes, suggesting those who seek it out respond more warmly than its broader audience. A critics' rating of 5.9 out of 10 from 78 reviews places it close to the IMDb figure.
