Still Walking

The Yokoyama family gathers at the parents' home in Yokohama one summer day. The occasion is the anniversary of the death of the eldest son, Junpei, who drowned fifteen years earlier while saving a stranger. The retired Kyohei has never come to terms with the loss, and his wife Toshiko keeps the household running much as it always has. Their surviving son, Ryota, travels in reluctantly with his wife Yukari and her son from an earlier marriage. His sister Chinami and her family are already there. Over the course of the visit, old tensions and buried feelings surface as the family trades news and memories.

The film was directed and written by Hirokazu Kore-eda, the fourth of the sixteen features he has directed, following Nobody Knows and preceding Air Doll. Hiroshi Abe plays Ryota, with Yui Natsukawa as Yukari, YOU as Chinami, Kazuya Takahashi as Nobuo Kataoka, Shohei Tanaka as Atsushi Yokoyama and Hotaru Nomoto as Satsuki Kataoka. It was produced by Satoshi Kohno, Yoshihiro Kato and Hijiri Taguchi for Bandai Visual, TV Man Union, Cinequanon and Eisei Gekijo, and runs 114 minutes.

The film took about four million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.9 out of 10 from roughly 21,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.8 out of 10 from over 460 votes. A critics' rating of 8.6 out of 10 from 66 reviews places it well above both audience scores.
