The Edge of Love
Short description
Set in London and Wales during the Second World War, The Edge of Love follows the poet Dylan Thomas and the people drawn into his orbit. Dylan's childhood friend Vera Phillips, now a singer, meets him again by chance in wartime London. Dylan's wife Caitlin, initially wary of Vera, becomes close to her as the three share a household. Vera falls for William Killick, an army officer sent away to fight, and her life becomes entangled with the couple's as the strain of separation and Dylan's behavior takes its toll.
The film draws on the real relationship between Dylan Thomas, his wife Caitlin, Vera Phillips and William Killick. John Maybury directed from a screenplay by Sharman Macdonald, with Keira Knightley as Vera, Sienna Miller as Caitlin, Matthew Rhys as Dylan and Cillian Murphy as William. It was Maybury's third feature, after Love Is the Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon and The Jacket. Produced in the United Kingdom by companies including BBC Film and Capitol Films, it took around four million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.1 from about twenty thousand votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.2 from roughly four hundred. A film critics' rating of 5.5 from fifty-seven reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores.
