Short description
Surinder Sahni is a quiet, ordinary office worker in Amritsar whose life changes when an old professor asks him to marry his daughter, Taani, after her fiancé dies in an accident. Surinder agrees, and the two settle into a marriage of convenience in his modest home. He falls in love with his lively young wife, but she remains distant and makes clear she cannot return his feelings.
When Taani joins a dance class hoping to take part in a competition, Surinder sees a way to get closer to her. Without revealing who he is, he adopts a different appearance and manner as Raj, her cheerful and confident dance partner, and the two grow close as the contest approaches.
Aditya Chopra directed and wrote the film, his third feature after Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Mohabbatein, and produced it with Yash Chopra for Yash Raj Films. Shah Rukh Khan plays both Surinder and Raj, with Anushka Sharma making her debut as Taani; Vinay Pathak, M. K. Raina, Manmeet Singh and Isha Koppikar appear in supporting roles. Released in December 2008, it grossed about 30 million USD worldwide. It holds a rating of 7.2 on IMDb from roughly 59,000 votes and 7.1 on TMDB from over 300 votes, while critics gave it 6.7 from nine reviews, so audiences rated it somewhat more warmly than reviewers did.
