Short description
Five years after Vikings and dragons made peace on Berk, Hiccup and his dragon Toothless spend their days flying beyond the island, mapping lands no one has charted before. Their friends have turned dragon riding into a competitive sport at home. On one of these flights, the pair find an ice-covered cave sheltering hundreds of wild dragons, watched over by a mysterious rider. At the same time, a conqueror is gathering an army of dragons to dominate both beasts and people, and Hiccup is drawn into the conflict that follows.
Dean DeBlois wrote and directed this 2014 DreamWorks Animation sequel, the third feature he directed after Lilo & Stitch and the first How to Train Your Dragon. Bonnie Arnold produced. Jay Baruchel returns as the voice of Hiccup, with Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera and Jonah Hill among the cast.
Made for about 145 million dollars, the film took roughly 622 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 7.8 from some 399,000 votes, on TMDB 7.7 from around 10,700, and its critics' rating stands at 7.8 from 186 reviews, so audiences and critics landed in much the same place. DeBlois continued the series with The Hidden World in 2019.

- Dean DeBlois drew primary inspiration from "Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back" (1980) when creating this film.
- When designing the islands of their fantasy world, the artists of "How to Train Your Dragon 2" drew inspiration from the nature of Norway.
- The film's trailer featured music titled "Beyond the Clouds," composed by the music production company Audiomachine.
- When Dean DeBlois was offered to direct a sequel, he agreed on the condition that he would be allowed to expand the franchise into a trilogy.
- Chris Sanders, the writer and director of "How to Train Your Dragon" (2010), served only as an executive producer on this film. Sanders was unable to participate as a writer and director on this project due to his commitment to "The Croods" (2013).
- Unlike the first film, this one was distributed by 20th Century Fox, as DreamWorks Animation ceased cooperation with Paramount Pictures in 2012.
- This is the first film from DreamWorks Animation to utilize new animation and lighting software. The new programs, called "Premo" and "Torch," allowed for improvements in facial animation, the feel of fat, the sensation of wobbly skin, and the movement of skin over muscles.
