La bola negra is a drama and war film that follows the connected lives of three men living in different eras of Spanish history, specifically in 1932, 1937, and 2017. Their stories are linked by themes of desire, sexuality, and the lasting impact of pain and heritage. One narrative thread involves a surviving manuscript written by Federico Garcia Lorca before his death during the Spanish Civil War, which eventually becomes a family relic and reveals a hidden secret to a man in the present day.
The film was co-directed and co-written by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo. This production is the second film they have directed together, following their 2017 project Holy Camp!. The cast features Penélope Cruz as Nené Romero and Lola Dueñas as Teresa, alongside Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González, and Milo Quifes. A joint production between Spain and France, the movie was produced by companies including Movistar+, El Deseo, Le Pacte, and Atresmedia Cine. With a runtime of 155 minutes, the film explores how perspectives on same-sex love have evolved over time and how trauma persists across generations.
