Infernal Affairs III continues the story of Lau Kin-ming, a man who rose through the police force while secretly serving the triad boss Hon Sam. Ten months after the events of the first film, Lau has been moved to internal affairs and is under scrutiny, though an inquiry has accepted his account of what happened. Uneasy about whether other moles remain in the police, he begins hunting for anyone still working for Sam. His suspicion falls on Yeung Kam-wing, an ambitious superintendent whose record of advancement seems to echo Lau's own past. As Lau pursues him, the film also moves back in time to follow the undercover officer Chan Wing-yan, showing his years inside Sam's gang, his dealings with the mainland criminal Shen Cheng, and his meetings with the police psychologist Dr. Lee.
Andrew Lau Wai-keung and Alan Mak directed, with Felix Chong Man-keung and Mak writing the screenplay. It is the fifteenth of the twenty-five films Andrew Lau has directed in chronological order, following Infernal Affairs II the same year. Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Andy Lau, Leon Lai, Chen Daoming, Anthony Wong and Eric Tsang lead a credited cast of twenty-five.
Released in December 2003, the film took about 4 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.8/10 from 16,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.9/10 from 382 votes, scores that show a modest but settled reception rather than the enthusiasm the earlier instalments drew.
