Short description

Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna follows Dev Saran, a former professional footballer whose career ended after a leg injury, and Maya Talwar, a kindergarten teacher who married her childhood friend Rishi despite not returning his feelings. Both are settled into marriages that look stable from the outside, yet each feels something essential is missing. When they meet by chance, they begin as friends who try to help each other repair their marriages, but their bond deepens into an affair that unsettles both households. Dev's wife Riya is a fashion editor whose professional success contrasts with his own stalled life, while Rishi's devotion to Maya leaves her unable to reciprocate.

The film was directed by Karan Johar, who wrote the screenplay with Shibani Bathija; Hiroo Johar produced it for Dharma Productions. It is Johar's third feature, arriving between Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and My Name Is Khan. Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji lead as Dev and Maya, with Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Amitabh Bachchan and Kirron Kher among the credited cast of twenty-one.

Released in August 2006, the film runs 193 minutes. Made for about 7 million USD, it took roughly 17 million USD worldwide. It holds a 6/10 on IMDb from over twenty-one thousand votes and a 6.4/10 on TMDB from several hundred. The critics' rating stands at 6/10 from twelve reviews, close to what audiences gave it.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Initially, Rani Mukerji was supposed to play the role of Ria, which was later played by Preity Zinta.
  • Director and screenwriter Karan Johar asked Shah Rukh Khan to direct the hotel scene himself. Khan felt awkward and therefore asked Amitabh Bachchan to 'direct' the shoot over the phone, as Bachchan was not on set.
  • The role of Maya was initially prepared for Kajol, but after her refusal, the role went to Rani Mukerji.
  • The idea for the film came to Karan Johar in London, where he saw Richard Linklater's drama 'Before Sunset' (2004) about two people who meet by chance after a long separation. Afterward, Johar went to a restaurant where he overheard a married couple at the next table deciding to separate on quite friendly terms. Johar decided to explore this theme, which resulted in this film.
  • Shah Rukh Khan directed all the scenes involving sports, as Karan Johar has absolutely no understanding of the subject. Shah Rukh Khan, on the other hand, was seriously involved in sports in his time, particularly football and cricket.
  • The role of Rishi Talwar was originally intended for Ajay Devgn, but he turned it down.
