Ella Enchanted
Short description
Ella Enchanted is a fantasy comedy set in a magical kingdom where every child receives a gift from a fairy at birth. Ella's gift, bestowed by the fairy Lucinda, is obedience: she cannot refuse any command or request, no matter who gives it. This makes her vulnerable to anyone willing to take advantage of her, including her stepmother and stepsisters once they discover what she must do. Hoping to have the spell removed, Ella sets out to find Lucinda, a journey that takes her through a land of ogres, giants and elves, and brings her into contact with Prince Charmont, whose uncle Sir Edgar has taken the throne and rules harshly.
Tommy O'Haver directed the film, which followed his 2001 comedy Get Over It. Karen McCullah, Kirsten Smith and Laurie Craig wrote the screenplay, and Anne Hathaway plays Ella, with Hugh Dancy as Char, Cary Elwes as Edgar, Joanna Lumley as Dame Olga and Lucy Punch as Hattie. Around 40 credited cast members and 96 credited crew members worked on the production, which had a budget of about 31 million US dollars and earned roughly 27 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.3 from about 80,000 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 6.5 from over 2,000 votes. A critics' rating of 5.9 from 115 reviews places it below both audience scores. The film runs 96 minutes and was made in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
What's left behind the scenes
- The slippers Ella had to steal were made of glass. Two pairs were made, but Anne Hathaway broke both of them during filming.
- Lamia, where Hugh Dancy’s character resides, was created in the image of central Manhattan (referring to the arrangement of castles, bridges, rivers, etc.). The name also alludes to the ancient Greek myth of Lamia.
- Jim Carter, Patrick Bergin, and Daniel Naprous believed that the makeup would take, as promised, 2 hours, but it actually took between 4 and 6 hours.
- During the filming of a fight scene, a horse fell on a stuntman, resulting in numerous pelvic fractures.
- Two twin babies – one crying and one content – participated in the filming. The film’s title, “Ella Enchanted,” was superimposed over the babies’ faces to conceal their substitution.
- Anne Hathaway performs Queen’s song “Somebody to Love” herself in the film.
- To create a fairytale atmosphere, the cloudy sky of Ireland was rendered a brilliant blue using computer technology.
- Heston was initially planned to be a puppet, but director Tommy O’Haver soon realized that wasn't working, and the character was made using computer graphics.
