Paul Blart: Mall Cop
Short description
Paul Blart is a single father in New Jersey who works as a security guard at a large shopping mall. He has long wanted to join the state police, but the physical exam has stood in his way, and he takes his mall job far more seriously than anyone around him does. When armed robbers seize the building and take hostages, including people close to him, Paul finds himself the one person left free to act.
The film was directed by Steve Carr, his sixth feature after Next Friday, Dr. Dolittle 2, Daddy Day Care, Rebound and Are We Done Yet?. Kevin James stars as Paul and wrote the screenplay with Nick Bakay; Adam Sandler is among the producers. Keir O'Donnell, Jayma Mays, Raini Rodriguez, Shirley Knight and Stephen Rannazzisi appear in supporting roles, and the production credits a large cast and crew.
Made for about 26 million dollars, the film grossed roughly 183 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. Audiences have been modest in their scoring: it holds 5.3 out of 10 on IMDb from around 124,000 votes and 5.4 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 2,790 votes. A critics' rating of 4.6 out of 10 from 117 reviews places professional opinion slightly below those audience figures.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming began in late February 2008 in Boston and its surroundings. The main filming location was the Burlington Mall supermarket, located in the town of Burlington near Boston. From late February to mid-April, the supermarket was decorated with Christmas decorations, and some other changes were made compared to its usual appearance.
- The film crew considered the Willowbrook Mall supermarket in New Jersey as a suitable filming location, but its owners were not at all enthusiastic about the idea and refused.
- By the time the film was released, The Sharper Image corporation, in whose store the events unfold, had already declared bankruptcy, completely lost all its assets, and had no retail outlets.
