Short description
Nothing But the Truth follows Rachel Armstrong, a Washington reporter who publishes a story identifying a covert CIA officer named Erica Van Doren. When a special prosecutor demands that she name the person who gave her that information, Rachel refuses and is jailed for contempt. Her lawyer, Albert Burnside, takes her case through the courts while she weighs her professional principles against the strain the imprisonment places on her marriage and her relationship with her son.
Rod Lurie wrote and directed the film, which came after Resurrecting the Champ in his filmography. Kate Beckinsale plays Rachel, with Matt Dillon as prosecutor Patton Dubois, Alan Alda as Burnside, Vera Farmiga as Van Doren, Angela Bassett as Bonnie Benjamin and David Schwimmer as Rachel's husband Ray. The production had a budget of 12 million dollars and a credited cast of 51.
Released in December 2008, the drama runs 108 minutes. It holds a rating of 7.1 out of 10 on IMDb from around 42,000 votes and 6.9 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 577 votes, indicating a small but generally favourable audience response.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film is based on real events that occurred at the end of 2005 with Judith Miller, an American journalist for The New York Times, who was involved in a scandal over a leak of information from the White House. Miller spent about three months in jail after refusing to reveal the source who told her the name of a CIA agent.
- The film includes a scene in which Vera Farmiga's character undergoes a lie detector test. For the filming of this scene, director Rod Lurie enlisted a real specialist with a genuine polygraph. He asked the actress if her name was Erika Von Doren and if she worked for the CIA (as her character in the film). After filming, the specialist told the director that Farmiga had deceived the machine – it showed that, when answering affirmatively to the questions about her name and place of work, the actress was telling the truth.
