Louis Hinds and Floyd Henderson were once backup singers for a soul group led by Marcus Hooks. After two decades without speaking to each other, the two men reluctantly agree to travel together from Los Angeles to New York for a tribute concert honoring their late frontman. Joining them on the cross-country drive is Cleo, a young singer who may be Floyd's daughter, along with a driver played by Sean Hayes. Long-standing grievances and clashing personalities make the journey difficult, though the trip also brings unexpected encounters.
Malcolm D. Lee directed the film, which sits between Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins and Scary Movie 5 in his filmography. Robert Ramsey and Matthew Stone wrote the screenplay, and the cast is led by Samuel L. Jackson as Louis, Bernie Mac as Floyd, and Sharon Leal as Cleo, with Adam Herschman and Affion Crockett in supporting roles. Soul Men was released in November 2008 and runs 103 minutes.
Made for a budget of 40 million dollars, the film returned about 12 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6.4 rating from roughly 12,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.2 from about 187 votes. A critics' rating of 5.2 from 99 reviews places it below both audience scores.
