Berlin Calling centres on Martin Karow, known as DJ Ickarus, a Berlin electronic musician whose life revolves around clubs, airports and the studio. He tours the world with Mathilde, who is both his manager and his girlfriend, and the two are close to releasing his biggest album yet. After a performance, an overdose lands him in a Berlin psychiatric clinic, throwing his plans into disarray. His time as a patient, his relationship and the fate of the record all hang in the balance as he tries to hold himself together.
Hannes Stöhr wrote and directed the film and produced it with Karsten Aurich. It was released in 2008 and runs 105 minutes. Paul Kalkbrenner, a figure from the electronic music world, plays Martin, with Rita Lengyel as Mathilde and Corinna Harfouch as Prof. Dr. Petra Paul; Araba Walton, Peter Schneider and Rolf Peter Kahl also appear. Blending comedy, drama and music, the film is set within the German electronic scene.
On IMDb it holds a score of 7.4 from roughly 21,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.8 from 379 votes. The smaller TMDB sample is markedly lower than the broader IMDb response, though both point to a generally favourable reception.
