Tai Chi Hero continues the story of Yang Lu Chan, a young man with a gift for martial arts who is widely dismissed as a simpleton because of a fleshy growth on his forehead. After helping defend the village of Chen, he is allowed to study the village's tai chi, which its residents normally keep from outsiders. A planned marriage to Chen Yu Niang, the master's daughter, falls through at the last moment, and the village faces a new threat from an old enemy who has allied himself with foreign commercial and railway interests determined to push their line through the village's land. The villagers must draw on their martial tradition to resist.
The film is the second entry in the Tai Chi trilogy and the second of two 2012 features directed by Stephen Fung, following Tai Chi Zero and preceding The Adventurers. The screenplay is by Kuo-Fu Chen, Cheng Hsiao-Tse and Chang Chia-lu. Jayden Yuan returns as Yang Lu Chan, with Yuan Wenkang, AngelaBaby, Shu Qi, William Fung Kwun-Man and the director himself among the credited cast of 24. It was produced in China by Huayi Brothers Pictures and Diversion Pictures on a budget of about 40 million dollars.
On IMDb the film holds a critics' rating of 5.1 out of 10 from 11 reviews, while on TMDB its audience rating is 6.1 out of 10 from 116 votes, placing the two closer together than is common.
