Short description
Following in his father's footsteps, Albert Pierrepoint becomes one of Britain's most prolific executioners, hiding his identity as a grocery deliveryman. But when his ambition to be the best inadvertently exposes his gruesome secret, he becomes a minor celebrity & faces a public outcry against the practice of hanging. Based on true events.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film tells the story of Albert Pierrepoint (1905-1992), who, despite the title, was not the last executioner in the UK. Pierrepoint retired in the mid-1950s shortly after the execution of Ruth Ellis (see Mike Newell's 1985 film 'Dance with a Stranger'), the last woman to be hanged in the UK. There was no single 'last executioner' per se, because the last two executions before the ban on capital punishment came into effect were carried out in two different cities simultaneously. Both criminals were convicted of the murder of John Alan West and executed at exactly 8:00 AM on August 13, 1964, in Manchester and Liverpool. Nevertheless, death sentences were still being handed down in the UK as late as November 1965.
