Spy Game centers on Nathan Muir, a veteran CIA officer on the verge of retirement in 1991. On what should be his last day at the agency, he learns that Tom Bishop, the young operative he once trained, has been imprisoned in China on espionage charges and is set to be executed within roughly a day. Fearing diplomatic fallout, the CIA would rather distance itself from Bishop than attempt a rescue, leaving Muir to work against his own superiors as he tries to save the man he mentored.
The film is directed by Tony Scott, the eleventh of the sixteen features he made, arriving between Enemy of the State and Man on Fire. Robert Redford plays Muir and Brad Pitt plays Bishop, with Catherine McCormack, Stephen Dillane, Larry Bryggman and Marianne Jean-Baptiste among the supporting cast. Michael Frost Beckner and David Arata wrote the screenplay, and Douglas Wick and Marc Abraham produced.
Released in November 2001, the film runs 126 minutes and was a large production, with a budget reported at around 115 million dollars and worldwide takings of roughly 143 million. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.1 from about 177,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a 6.9 from around 2,400 votes. The film critics' rating stands at 6.3 from 134 reviews, somewhat below the audience scores.
