The Drop

The Drop is a crime drama set in Brooklyn, where Bob Saginowski tends bar at a place run by his cousin Marv. The bar serves as a drop point for money collected by local criminals, and when it is robbed, Bob and Marv come under pressure from the underworld to recover what was taken. The investigation that follows reaches into the neighbourhood's past, where longtime residents, friends and rivals have always found ways to get by together. Bob's life grows more complicated after he takes in an injured pitbull puppy he finds in a rubbish bin and meets Nadia, the woman who helps him care for it.

The film was directed by Michaël R. Roskam, his second feature after Bullhead and the second of four films he has directed. Dennis Lehane wrote the screenplay, working from his own short story. Tom Hardy plays Bob, Noomi Rapace plays Nadia, and James Gandolfini plays Cousin Marv in one of his later roles, with Matthias Schoenaerts, John Ortiz and Ann Dowd also appearing in a cast of thirty-one credited performers.

Made for about 13 million dollars, the film took roughly 19 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 170,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.8 out of 10 from about 2,500 votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 198 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores.
