Taxidermia follows three generations of an unusual Hungarian family, each defined by an obsessive pursuit. The first is a soldier posted to a remote outpost during the Second World War, consumed by unfulfilled desire; the second is his son, a competitive eater who competes for his country and hopes to win both a title and the woman beside him; the third is a taxidermist who preserves animals and struggles to connect with people. The son narrates the family's history, blending real events with his own surreal imagination.
György Pálfi directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Zsófia Ruttkay. Released in 2006, it was his first feature, made on a budget of about two million dollars as a co-production between Hungary, Austria and France. The cast includes Csaba Czene, Gergely Trócsányi, Marc Bischoff and Piroska Molnár, with Gábor Máté appearing as the older Kálmán and István Gyuricza as the young lieutenant.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.8 from around 20,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.6 from some 362 votes, indicating a modest but stable level of interest. Pálfi went on to direct Final Cut: Ladies and Gentlemen, Hungary 2011, Perpetuity and Hen.
