Guru

Guru tells the story of Gurukant Desai, a young man from the small Gujarati village of Idhar who dreams of building his own business rather than accepting the limited future his birthplace offers. After a period in Turkey, he marries Sujata for her dowry and moves to Mumbai to start a trading company. He soon finds that the business world is a closed circle controlled by a handful of wealthy, well-established figures who have little interest in admitting an outsider. Gurukant pushes ahead anyway, and his rise brings him into contact with the publisher Manik Dasgupta, who supports him and treats him almost like a son. The relationship sours as Gurukant takes full credit for his success, and his methods eventually draw serious consequences.

The film was released in January 2007 and runs 166 minutes. Mani Ratnam directed and produced it with G. Srinivasan, and wrote the screenplay with Anurag Kashyap. It sits between Dil Se.. and Raavanan in Ratnam's filmography. Abhishek Bachchan plays Gurukant, with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Sujata, Mithun Chakraborty as Manik Dasgupta, R. Madhavan and Vidya Balan as Shyam and Meenakshi Saxena, and Arya Babbar among a credited cast of twenty. Made on a reported budget of 150 million dollars, it returned 24 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.7 from around 26,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.9 from 143 votes; critics gave it 7.3 from twelve reviews.
