Short description
Mood Indigo is a French fantasy drama directed by Michel Gondry, based on Boris Vian's novel L'Écume des jours. It follows Colin, a wealthy and inventive young Parisian, who falls in love with Chloë. The two marry, but during their honeymoon Chloë falls ill: a water lily begins to grow inside her lung. As the flower spreads, her condition worsens, and the only treatment is to surround her with fresh flowers at all times. The cost of keeping her alive drains Colin's fortune, forcing him into increasingly absurd jobs, while the couple's apartment slowly falls apart around them and their circle of friends drifts away. The film blends this story with a surreal visual world in which everyday objects, animals and interiors behave strangely.
Romain Duris and Audrey Tautou play the couple, with Gad Elmaleh, Omar Sy, Aïssa Maïga and Charlotte Le Bon in supporting roles. The screenplay was written by Gondry with Luc Bossi, who also produced. The film sits between The Green Hornet and The Book of Solutions in Gondry's directing career.
Made on a budget of about 16 million dollars, it earned roughly 10 million worldwide. It holds a 6.1 rating on TMDB from 659 votes, and a critics' score of 6 out of 10 from 111 reviews.
