Short description
Frederick Loren, an eccentric millionaire, invites five strangers to spend a night in a house with a sinister reputation, offering each of them ten thousand dollars if they survive until morning. The guests arrive in hearses and are given guns for protection, and once midnight passes the doors are locked. Loren's wife Annabelle joins the party, and the guests soon find themselves caught between the host and his spouse as strange and violent events unfold around them.
William Castle directed and produced the film from a screenplay by Robb White. It was released in 1959, between Fort Ti and The Tingler in Castle's filmography, and runs seventy-five minutes. Vincent Price plays Frederick Loren, with Carol Ohmart as Annabelle, Richard Long as Lance Schroeder, Alan Marshal as Dr. David Trent, Carolyn Craig as Nora Manning and Elisha Cook Jr. as Watson Pritchard. Allied Artists Pictures produced it with Castle's own company.
Audiences on TMDB rate the film 6.7 out of 10 from 635 votes. A critics' rating of 7.2 out of 10 from 42 reviews places it somewhat higher with reviewers than with the general audience, and both point to a durable following for the film.
What's left behind the scenes
- The great success of this film inspired Hitchcock to shoot his own low-budget horror film – “Psycho” (1960).
- The skeleton that rises from the vat of acid was a real human skeleton. As with the props in most horror films, it was cheaper and easier to buy a real skeleton than to make a fake one with the props department’s resources.
