Provoked tells the true story of Kiranjit Ahluwalia, a woman from Punjab who moves to London after an arranged marriage to Deepak Ahluwalia. He appears attentive at first, but over time he becomes violent, drinks heavily and is unfaithful, and he forces himself on her. After roughly a decade of abuse and two children together, she sets him on fire, and he dies. She is charged with murder and sentenced to life in prison, where she shares a cell with a white British woman named Veronica Scott, who helps her learn English. Through Veronica's contacts, a lawyer takes an interest in her case, which also reaches a small South Asian community organisation, the Southall Black Sisters, and its campaign on her behalf.
Jag Mundhra directs this British-Indian drama, the fifth of the six features listed for him, following Bawandar in 2000 and preceding Naughty @ 40 in 2011. The screenplay is by Carl Austin, Rahila Gupta and Sanjeev Mirajkar, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan plays Kiranjit, with Miranda Richardson as Veronica, Naveen Andrews as Deepak, Nandita Das as Radha Dalal and Robbie Coltrane as Lord Edward Foster. It runs 105 minutes.
On TMDB the film holds a rating of 6.7 from 24 votes, a modest figure resting on a small sample of viewers.
