Set in Copenhagen's Nordvest district, one of the city's poorest and most diverse neighbourhoods, Northwest follows Casper, an eighteen-year-old who lives with his mother and two younger siblings. He supports the household by carrying out burglaries for Jamal, a local gang boss. When Björn, a figure from the organised crime world, offers him work, Casper takes the chance to move up, drawn into dealing drugs and prostitution. As the rivalry between Björn and Jamal turns violent, Casper and his family are pulled into the middle of a conflict that puts them at risk.
Michael Noer directed and co-wrote the film with Rasmus Heisterberg, and it followed his 2010 debut R. It is a Danish production from DR, the Danish Film Institute and Nordisk Film, with a reported budget of 13 million dollars. Gustav Dyekjaer Giese plays Casper, with Oscar Dyekjær Giese as his brother Andy, Lene Maria Christensen as Olivia, Annemieke Bredahl Peppink as Freja, Nicholas Westwood Kidd as Robin and Roland Møller as Björn, among a credited cast of thirty. Its 100-minute running time places it firmly in crime-thriller territory.
The film was released in April 2013. Audience response has been moderate: on IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from roughly 4,500 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.4 from a much smaller sample of 71 votes. Noer went on to direct Papillon, Before the Frost and Birthday Girl in the years that followed.
