Six months after the 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia, Jeanne and Paul Belhmer are still living in Thailand, unable to accept that their young son died in the disaster. Because his body was never found, Jeanne clings to the belief that he survived, and when she glimpses a boy she takes to be her son in footage about orphans living in the jungle, she becomes certain of it. Her husband is doubtful, but he follows her anyway.

Their search leads them away from the city and into the region's margins, guided by the mysterious Thaksin Gao, and eventually into dense tropical jungle inhabited by feral children who tolerate no intruders. Vinyan, the film's title, refers to the restless souls of those who died badly, and the couple's journey carries them into that unsettled territory.

Fabrice Du Welz directed and wrote the film, his second feature after Calvaire in 2005 and the second of seven features he has directed to date. Emmanuelle Béart plays Jeanne, with Rufus Sewell as Paul, Petch Osathanugrah as Gao and Julie Dreyfus among the supporting cast. The production was a Belgian, British and French co-production. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.1 out of 10 from 137 votes.
