Lee Ja-sung is a police officer who has spent years working undercover inside Goldmoon, one of South Korea's largest criminal organisations. When the boss dies, the question of who takes over opens a power struggle between the group's second and third in command, Jung Chung and Lee Joong-gu. The police, led by detective Kang Hyung-chul, see the transition as a chance to extend their control through their long-embedded operative. Ja-sung, meanwhile, is under constant pressure to keep his cover and is about to become a father, leaving him torn between his duty and the ties he has formed inside the gang.
New World was released in 2013 and runs 134 minutes. Park Hoon-jung wrote the screenplay and directed it, making it the first film he directed in a run that continued with The Tiger, V.I.P., The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion, Night in Paradise, The Witch: Part 2. The Other One, The Childe and Tristes Tropiques. Lee Jung-jae plays Ja-sung, with Choi Min-sik as Kang, Hwang Jung-min as Jung Chung, Park Sung-woong as Lee Joong-gu, Song Ji-hyo as Shin-woo and Kim Yoon-sung as Seok-mo among a credited cast of 42. Han Jae-duk and Park Min-jeong produced.
The film took about 32 million US dollars worldwide. Audiences rate it 7.5 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 29,000 votes and 7.4 out of 10 on TMDB from around 567 votes, while a critics' score of 6.9 out of 10 from 16 reviews places it close to those audience figures.
