Winter in Wartime

Winter in Wartime is set in the occupied Netherlands during the harsh winter of 1944-45, when food is scarce and many people head east hoping to feed their families. In a small provincial town, the mayor tries to keep tensions with the German occupiers from escalating. His teenage son Michiel feels drawn to the resistance instead and resents his father's cautious approach. After a British pilot is shot down, Michiel becomes involved in sheltering him, a decision that pulls him and those close to him into danger.

The film is directed by Martin Koolhoven, his second feature, released in 2008 and followed by Brimstone in 2016. He wrote the screenplay with Paul Jan Nelissen and Mieke de Jong, and Els Vandevorst, Antonino Lombardo and San Fu Maltha produced. Martijn Lakemeier plays Michiel, with Yorick van Wageningen as Uncle Ben, Jamie Campbell Bower as the pilot Jack, Raymond Thiry as Johan van Beusekom, Anneke Blok as Lisa van Beusekom and Melody Klaver as Erica van Beusekom.

Made for about 4 million USD, the film took roughly 9 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7/10 from around 14,000 votes and on TMDB 6.7/10 from about 206 votes. A critics' rating of 6.6/10 from 64 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
