City Heat
Short description
City Heat is set in Kansas City in 1933, where Prohibition-era gangs, bootlegging and rackets keep the local underworld busy. Lieutenant Speer, a taciturn police officer, and Mike Murphy, a former colleague who now works as a private detective, once served together and were friends, but their relationship has since turned sour. Murphy's partner, Swift, comes into sudden money and is then killed, prompting Murphy to investigate on his own while Speer pursues the same case from the official side. Their reluctant partnership draws them into a conflict between rival criminal syndicates.
The film was directed by Richard Benjamin, arriving between My Favorite Year and The Money Pit in the sequence of features he directed. Clint Eastwood plays Speer and Burt Reynolds plays Murphy, with Jane Alexander, Madeline Kahn, Rip Torn and Irene Cara among the supporting cast. Blake Edwards and Joseph Stinson wrote the screenplay, and Fritz Manes produced.
Released in December 1984, the film had a budget of 25 million US dollars and took about 38 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 4 out of 10 from 18 reviews, while on TMDB its audience rating is 5.5 out of 10 from 223 votes, a modest reception on both sides.
What's left behind the scenes
- When the film was being made and released, Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds, who played the main roles, were the most sought-after actors in the world. Eastwood agreed to star only on the condition that his fee would be higher than Reynolds' and his name would appear before Reynolds' in the credits.
- The film mentions a steamboat ticket to Bolivia, which is impossible since the film takes place in 1933, and Bolivia lost access to the Pacific Ocean back in 1883.
- During the filming of the scene where his character is hit in the face with a metal chair, Burt Reynolds (1936-2018) broke his jaw. The actor was put on a liquid diet and lost almost 31 pounds by the end of filming.
