Inherent Vice
Short description
In late-1960s Los Angeles, private investigator Larry "Doc" Sportello spends much of his time in a marijuana haze. His former girlfriend Shasta Fay Hepworth reappears with a request: she has become involved with a wealthy real estate developer, and she believes his wife and her lover are plotting to have him committed to a psychiatric facility. Doc begins looking into the matter, and the developer promptly vanishes, drawing the detective into a widening tangle of shady figures and criminal activity, including a hostile police lieutenant named Christian "Bigfoot" Bjornsen. The mystery itself keeps shifting as Doc moves through it.
Paul Thomas Anderson wrote and directed the film, his eighth feature in chronological order, following The Master and preceding Junun, and he also produced it with Daniel Lupi and JoAnne Sellar. Joaquin Phoenix plays Doc, with Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterston, Reese Witherspoon and Benicio del Toro among a credited cast of roughly one hundred. The 149-minute film is based on Thomas Pynchon's novel of the same name.
Made for around 20 million dollars, it returned about 15 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from over 109,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 from a few thousand. A critics' rating of 7.2 from 256 reviews places professional assessments noticeably above the audience scores.

- All scenes with Reese Witherspoon were filmed in 4 days. The screenwriter and director, Paul Thomas Anderson, was so impressed with her work on set that Anderson and lead actor Joaquin Phoenix started a conversation with the actress about changing the script and adding more scenes with her character, but Witherspoon convinced them not to. Anderson later admitted she was right.
