Noi the Albino

Noi the Albino is a drama set in a remote Icelandic fjord, where winter cuts the settlement off from the outside world behind mountains and snow. Seventeen-year-old Nói lives there with his grandmother, drifts through school, and spends his time in the bookshop and at the gas station rather than in class. He stands out among the villagers, not least because he is an albino, and he relates more easily to animals than to people. His wish to leave grows when he meets Íris, a girl from the city who works at the local filling station, and the two plan to get away together. His attempts to escape repeatedly go wrong, and it takes a sudden turn of events to shatter the world he knows.

Dagur Kári wrote and directed the film, his second feature after Dramarama in 2001 and before Virgin Mountain in 2015. Tómas Lemarquis plays Nói, with Elín Hansdóttir as Íris and Þröstur Leó Gunnarsson as Nói's father. The production was a Nordic and British co-production involving companies from Iceland, Germany, Denmark and the United Kingdom.

Released in early 2003, the film has an audience rating of 7 out of 10 on TMDB from 109 votes, while critics gave it 7.1 out of 10 across 51 reviews, so both groups have judged it similarly, with reviewers only slightly more positive.
