Rio 2

Rio 2 continues the story of Blu, a domesticated macaw living in Rio de Janeiro with his mate Jewel and their three young chicks. When Jewel decides the children should learn to live as wild birds, the family leaves the city for the Amazon rainforest. There Blu struggles to adjust to an unfamiliar environment and to make peace with the creatures around him, while also worrying that Jewel and the chicks may prefer life in the wild. Two threats complicate matters: a hostile father-in-law and a vengeful cockatoo named Nigel, who has his own plans for Blu.

The film is directed by Carlos Saldanha, who also directed the first Rio. It stands fifth in his directing chronology, after Gone Nutty, two Ice Age sequels and Rio, and before Rio, I Love You and Ferdinand. The screenplay is by Don Rhymer, Jenny Bicks and Yoni Brenner, with John C. Donkin, Bruce Anderson and Patrick Worlock producing. Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway return as the voices of Blu and Jewel, joined by Will.i.am, Jamie Foxx, Leslie Mann and George López; 73 cast members and 204 crew members are credited.

Produced by Blue Sky Studios with 20th Century Fox, the film cost about 103 million dollars and took roughly 499 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. Ratings are moderate: 6.3 out of 10 on IMDb from 111,000 votes, and 6.5 out of 10 on TMDB from 3,859 votes. A critics' score of 5.4 out of 10 from 113 reviews sits below both audience figures.
