Short description
A deputy police commissioner named DeSilva is pursuing the head of a powerful crime network. He recruits a civilian named Vijay, who is a dead ringer for the wanted boss, and installs him inside the organization as a replacement, hoping to bring it down from within. The deception holds, but when DeSilva is killed, Vijay is left alone in the role, and the only person who knew who he really is can no longer vouch for him.
The film is a remake of the 1978 Hindi hit of the same title. Farhan Akhtar directed it, his second feature after Lakshya, and he produced it with Ritesh Sidhwani through Excel Entertainment; the screenplay is credited to Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar. Shah Rukh Khan plays both the gang leader and Vijay, with Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Arjun Rampal, Boman Irani, Om Puri and Isha Koppikar in supporting parts, among a credited cast of 25.
Released in October 2006, it runs 178 minutes and was made for about 5 million US dollars, going on to take roughly 20 million worldwide, a strong return on its cost. On IMDb it holds 7.2 out of 10 from about 44,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.9 from around 321. Akhtar returned to the character with Don 2 in 2011.

- The role of Jasjit was offered to actor Akshay Kumar, but he declined. Ultimately, the role went to Arjun Rampal.
- Actress Yana Gupta was considered for the role of Kamini due to her resemblance to Helen, who played the role in the 1978 film of the same name.
- To prepare for their roles in the film, actors Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, and Arjun Rampal underwent a special training program in Shaolin martial arts under the guidance of specialists.
- The password incorrectly entered by the character Joshi on the computer – “F09AK74” – is the birthday code of Farhan Akhtar.
- Actor Hrithik Roshan was considered for the lead male role, but after the script was finalized, Farhan Akhtar realized that the role required a more mature actor, such as Shah Rukh Khan.
