Gwendolyn Shepherd is a sixteen-year-old Londoner whose family has carried a secret for generations: a gene that lets certain members travel through time. Everyone assumes her cousin Charlotte inherited it, and the household revolves around Charlotte accordingly. Then Gwendolyn unexpectedly finds herself thrown into the past, and her family realises she is the one with the gift. She is drawn into a secret society that has watched her since birth and told she is the Ruby, the last of twelve time travellers. Paired with the aloof Gideon de Villiers, she begins moving between centuries to uncover what her family has hidden and why others are pursuing travellers like her.
Felix Fuchssteiner directed this German production, the first feature in the chronological list of his films, ahead of Sapphire Blue and Emerald Green. Katharina Schöde wrote the screenplay, and Tom Blieninger, Hans W. Geißendörfer and Markus Zimmer produced. Maria Ehrich plays Gwendolyn, with Jannis Niewöhner as Gideon, Laura Berlin as Charlotte, Uwe Kockisch as Falk de Villiers, Josefine Preuß as Lucy Montrose and Florian Bartholomäi as Paul de Villiers. The film runs 122 minutes and took in roughly 6 million USD worldwide on release in March 2013.
Audience scores are moderate and closely matched: on IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from about 9,100 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.9 out of 10 from around 1,161 votes.
