Giuseppe Garibaldi, known to everyone as Peppino, lives in a small mountain village where he works as a temporary library employee and spends his free time fishing with friends. His son regards him as a failure, but Peppino remains an optimist. Through a mix-up among politicians, he is mistakenly elected President of the Italian Republic, and a man with no aptitude for the role finds that his common sense and instinctive manner prove unexpectedly effective, even as protocol defeats him.
The film is a comedy directed by Riccardo Milani, made between Piano, Solo and Do You See Me? in his filmography, from a screenplay by Fabio Bonifacci and produced by Francesca Cima and Nicola Giuliano. Claudio Bisio plays Peppino, with Kasia Smutniak as Janis, the presidency's unyielding deputy secretary general, alongside Giuseppe Fiorello, Remo Girone, Massimo Popolizio and Cesare Bocci among a credited cast of twenty-one.
Released in Italy in March 2013 and running 98 minutes, the film took about 10 million dollars worldwide at the box office. On IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from roughly 3,800 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 out of 10 from some 711 votes, a consistent if modest verdict from viewers.
