Short description
Three journalism students share a flat and a conviction that news and rumour amount to much the same thing. For a class assignment, Derrick, Cathy and Travis decide to test how a story travels by inventing one about a classmate, Naomi, a young woman known around campus for her views on chastity. The tale they set loose concerns a night when Naomi drank heavily and was taken advantage of by her boyfriend, Beau. It spreads quickly, gaining detail as it goes, and Naomi herself comes to accept it, involving the police. What the students treated as an experiment acquires consequences they cannot recall or contain.
Davis Guggenheim directed, working from a screenplay by Gregory Poirier, with James Marsden, Lena Headey, Norman Reedus and Kate Hudson leading a credited cast of thirty-three. The film was Guggenheim's first feature, arriving six years before his documentary An Inconvenient Truth and long before STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie and Deaf President Now!. Released in April 2000 on a budget of about 14 million dollars, it took in roughly 5 million worldwide.
On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 4.5 out of 10 from sixty-seven reviews, while on TMDB its audience rating stands at 5.8 out of 10 from around 270 votes, a narrower gap than such figures often show.
What's left behind the scenes
- James Marsden performed one of the songs for the film.
- To James Marsden’s great disappointment, one of his favorite scenes was cut from the film during editing, in which Derek, close to tears, calls his parents. Director Davis Guggenheim, however, decided that the audience would begin to sympathize with Derek too much. One way or another, this scene can be seen on some DVD releases of the film.
- The university attended by the students was also used for several other films, including "Urban Legends" (1998) and "The Skulls" (2000). Coincidentally, Joshua Jackson starred in all three films.
- Filming took place in Toronto and the province of Ontario from October to December 1998.
