Catherine Morland, the daughter of a country clergyman, is fond of sensational Gothic novels and hopes for a little adventure of her own. When family friends Mr and Mrs Allen invite her to spend the season in Bath, she is introduced to society there and meets both the Thorpe family and Henry Tilney, a good-humoured young clergyman. Henry's father, General Tilney, invites Catherine to stay at the family seat, Northanger Abbey, whose gloomy atmosphere encourages her imagination to run away with her. Her feelings for Henry grow, but the general's plans for his son rest on a mistaken impression of Catherine's prospects.
This 2007 television adaptation of Jane Austen's novel was directed by Jon Jones from a screenplay by Andrew Davies, with Keith Thompson, Morgan O'Sullivan and James Flynn producing for WGBH, Granada Television, ITV Productions and the Irish Film Industry. The film has been rated 7.2 out of 10 on IMDb from around 17,000 votes, and 6.8 out of 10 on TMDB from 319 votes, indicating a generally favourable but not unanimous audience response.
