Black Dog
Short description
Black Dog is an action thriller about Jack Crews, a long-haul trucker who has just been released from prison and is struggling to support his wife and child. Burdened by debt and under pressure to provide, he takes a driving job from a man named Cutler, hauling a load across the country without being told what it contains. The cargo turns out to be illegal weapons, and Crews finds himself pursued by criminals and by federal agents alike. Cutler also has Crews's family, and the run becomes a fight to survive and get them back.
The film was directed by Kevin Hooks, its fifth feature following Strictly Business, Passenger 57, Irresistible Force and Fled. Patrick Swayze plays Crews, with Meat Loaf as Red, Randy Travis as Earl, Gabriel Casseus as Sonny, Graham Beckel as Cutler and Brenda Strong as Melanie. William Mickelberry and Dan Vining wrote the screenplay, and Raffaella De Laurentiis, Mark W. Koch and Michael Ilitch Jr. produced. Made for about 30 million US dollars, it took roughly 13 million worldwide, well short of its cost. On IMDb it holds a 6.4 rating from 310 votes; the critics' score of 3.7 from 21 reviews is noticeably lower.
What's left behind the scenes
- Kevin Sorbo was initially cast in the lead role, but dropped out of the film due to medical issues.
- The FBI Headquarters shown in the film is actually the Georgia-Pacific skyscraper in downtown Atlanta, Georgia.
- According to Vic Armstrong, the stunt team, including second unit director and stunt coordinator Harry Hymes, was fired by the producers. They then called Vic Armstrong to shoot the truck chases and complete the stunt scenes. Part of the stunt team remained on set and was rehired by Armstrong. This explains the presence of two stunt coordinators.
