Short description
The Collingwood family arrives at their isolated lake house for a quiet holiday. Their daughter Mari and her friend Paige go into town for the evening, where they meet a young man named Justin. What begins as a casual night out turns violent when Justin's father, an escaped convict named Krug, appears with his companions. The two girls are taken captive. Mari survives the attack and reaches her parents' house, but her pursuers end up at the same building seeking shelter for the night. Once John and Emma Collingwood understand who they have let into their home and what was done to their daughter, they turn on the intruders. This is a remake of Wes Craven's 1972 film of the same name.
Dennis Iliadis directs his first English-language feature, which holds the first position in the chronological list of films he has directed. The screenplay is by Carl Ellsworth and Adam Alleca, with Wes Craven and Sean S. Cunningham, producer of the original film, among the producers. Tony Goldwyn and Monica Potter play the parents, Sara Paxton plays Mari, Garret Dillahunt plays Krug, and Aaron Paul and Spencer Treat Clark play Francis and Justin.
Made for roughly 15 million dollars, the film took around 33 million worldwide, a modest return relative to its production cost. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from about 108,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 6.5 from a much smaller pool of just over 2,000. A critics' score of 5.2 from 165 reviews places it below both audience figures.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, filming for the movie was planned to take place in Westport, Connecticut, where the original 1972 film was shot. However, due to wildfires, filming was moved to another location.
- The studio considered at least 100 directors before approving Dennis Iliadis.
- Actor Tony Goldwyn initially refused to star in the film due to the large amount of violence, but after watching "Hardcore" (2004), the actor changed his mind.
- Producer Jonathan Craven played the role of the boy whose balloon is burst by Craig in the original film "The Last House on the Left" (1972).
- Bruises can be seen on both Paige and Mary in the hotel room scene. In one interview, the actresses said the bruises were sustained during the filming of scenes in the forest that preceded the hotel scenes. The makeup artists tried to hide them with layers of cosmetics, but since the actresses performed their own stunts in the film, it proved very difficult to conceal the bruises with makeup.
